Replacement RO Membranes

This high quality FILMTECH thin film membrane can be used with any manufacturers RO unit that takes a standard membrane size.

Note that a matching flow restrictor must be used on the waste pipe, specific to the membrane output. We recommend changing the flow restrictor at the same time as the RO membrane.

What is a membrane and how does it work?

The membrane consists of several thin layers or sheets of film that are bonded together and rolled in a spiral configuration around a plastic tube, also known as a thin film composite or TFC membrane.

The material of the membrane is semipermeable: it allows water molecules pass through while acting as a barrier to dissolved solids (i.e.: mineral chemical contaminants). When the feed water stream passes across the surface of the membrane, the molecules penetrate the membrane surface, working their way around the spiral and collecting in the center tube.

The remaining contaminants are concentrated and washed from the surface of the membrane down the drain.

How long will a membrane last?

This is a somewhat difficult question to answer as it depends on how often the membrane is used and how well it has been looked after. Some areas in the country have much poorer tap water than others and in these areas the membrane will have to work harder to remove the impurities.

In general a membrane will last about 2 years, especially if regularly flushed. The best way to test the membrane is using a TDS meter to determine if the quality of the water has deteriorated.

A TDS Meter measures the amount of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in a solution.

This measurement is used to determine the purity of the water produced by your RO unit and will give an indication of when your DI resin or membrane life is coming to an end. The inline version measures the TDS of the feed water before the RO Unit and the TDS of the pure water from the unit.

Since dissolved ionized solids like salts and minerals contribute to the conductivity of a solution, a TDS meter measures the conductivity of the solution which is then converted to a TDS reading.

TDS is directly related to quality of water i.e., the lower a TDS figure, the more pure the water. As an example, reverse osmosis purified water will have a TDS between 0 and 10, whereas tap water will vary between 20 and 300.

Booster Pump for 50/75G RO Units

Suitable for any brand of RO Unit - This pump will significantly increase the volume of water from your unit and will also increase the water quality.

Generally RO units will produce on average about 50% of their stated membrane capacity. This is a result of the temperature and pressure of UK mains water being lower than the standard parameters used for membrane flow specification. Often boosting the pressure with one of these units will give you the full stated membrane volume - summer or winter.

The increased pressure also allows the membrane to work more efficiently often giving a lower TDS in the RO product water.

These units utilise a transformer to run at low voltage and are suitable for 1/4 inch RO Pipe.
